Chapter 3

1 NOW there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David; but David grew stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul became weaker and impoverished.

2 And sons were born to David in Hebron; and his first-born was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;

3 And his second, Caleb, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom, the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

4 And the fourth, Adonijah, the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah, the son of Abital;

5 And the sixth, Ithream, by David's wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

6 And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.

7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Ana; and Ashbashul said to Abner, Why are you going in unto my father's concubine?

8 Then Abner was exceedingly displeased at the words of Ashbashul, and Abner said, Am I the leader of vicious men in Judah? This day I show kindness to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David, and yet you charge me today with this iniquity concerning a woman?

9 So do God to Abner, and more also, if I do not perform what the LORD has spoken to David, even so will I do,

10 To transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and to establish the throne of David over Israel and over Judah from Dan to Beer-sheba.

11 And Ashbashul could not reply to Abner, because he feared him.

12 And Abner sent messengers to David, saying, Whose is the land? Now make your covenant with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with you, to bring all Israel to you.

13 And David said, Well, I will make a covenant with you; but one thing I require of you, you shall not see my face, unless you first bring Malchel, Saul's daughter with you.

14 Then David sent messengers to Ashbashul Saul's son, saying, Deliver to me my wife, Malchel, whom I espoused for two hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

15 And Ashbashul sent, and took her from her husband, Palti, the son of Laish of Gallim.

16 And her husband went along with her weeping as far as Beth-hurim. Then Abner said to him, Return. And he returned.

17 And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying. You have sought for David in times past to be king over you;

18 Now then do so; for the LORD has spoken of David, saying. By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and out of the hand of all their enemies.

19 And Abner also spoke in the presence of the Benjamites; and Abner went also to speak in the presence of David in Hebron. And when it seemed good in the sight of all Israel and in the sight of the whole house of Benjamin,

20 Then Abner came to David at Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men who were with him a great feast.

21 And Abner said to David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you and that you may reign over all that your soul desires. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

22 And behold, the men of David and Joab came from a raid and brought a great spoil with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he bad sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

23 When Joab and all the people who were with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to King David, and he has sent him away and he has gone in peace.

24 Then Joab came to King David, and said to him, What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you; why have you sent him away, and he is gone from you?

25 Do you not know that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you and to know your going out and your coming in and to know all that you are doing?

26 And when Joab was come out from the presence of David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David knew it not.

27 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside to a secret place within the gate to speak with him quietly, and he smote him there in his abdomen, and he died, for the blood of Ashael his brother.

28 And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner;

29 Let it rest on the head of Joab and on the head of all his father's house; and let there never fail to be in the house of Joab one who has a discharge or who is a leper or who is a beggar holding a bowl or who falls by the sword or who lacks bread.

30 So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner because he had slain their brother Ashael at Gibeon in the battle.

31 And David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, Rend your clothes and gird yourselves with sackcloth and mourn for Abner. And King David himself and all the people followed the bier.

32 And they buried Abner in Hebron; and the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.

33 And the king lamented over Abner and said, Abner died like Nabal.

34 Your hands were not bound nor were your feet put into fetters; as one falls before the wicked men, so have you fallen. And all the people wept again over him.

35 And all the people tried to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, but David swore, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down.

36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them; whatever the king did pleased all the people;

37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that the king had no hand in the slaying of Abner, the son of Ner.

38 And the king said to the people, Do you not know that there is a great prince fallen this day in Israel?

39 And I am this day troubled, and as king I see that the sons of Zoriah are too hard for me; the LORD shall reward the evil doer according to his wickedness.

2 В Хевроне у Давуда родились сыновья: Его первенцем был Амнон, сын изреельтянки Ахиноамь;

6 Во время войны между домом Шаула и домом Давуда Авнер укреплял своё собственное положение в доме Шаула.

7 У Шаула была наложница по имени Рицпа, дочь Айя. И Иш-Бошет сказал Авнеру: – Почему ты спишь с наложницей моего отца?

8 Авнер очень разгневался на слова Иш-Бошета и ответил: – Разве я собака? Разве я перебежал на сторону Иудеи? Сегодня я верен дому твоего отца Шаула, его семье и друзьям. Я не предал тебя Давуду. А ты сейчас обвиняешь меня в преступлении из-за этой женщины!

9 Так пусть же Всевышний сурово накажет Авнера, если я не сделаю для Давуда того, о чём клялся ему Вечный, –

10 не заберу царство у дома Шаула и не поставлю престол Давуда над Исраилом и Иудеей от Дана на севере до Беэр-Шевы на юге.

11 И Иш-Бошет не осмеливался далее говорить с Авнером, потому что испугался его.

12 А Авнер отправил послов от своего лица сказать Давуду: «Чья эта земля? Заключи со мной договор, и я помогу тебе перетянуть на свою сторону весь Исраил».

13 Давуд ответил: – Хорошо, я заключу с тобой договор. Но я требую от тебя одного: не приходи ко мне, если не приведёшь с собой Михаль, дочь Шаула!

14 Затем Давуд послал вестников к сыну Шаула Иш-Бошету с требованием: «Дай мне мою жену Михаль, которую я взял себе за сто филистимских краеобрезаний».

15 Иш-Бошет отдал приказ, и её забрали от её мужа Палтиила, сына Лаиша.

16 Но её муж пошёл вслед и плакал, идя за ней, всю дорогу до Бахурима. Авнер сказал ему: – Ступай домой! И тот возвратился.

17 Авнер совещался со старейшинами Исраила и сказал: – Некогда вы хотели поставить Давуда своим царём.

18 Теперь сделайте это! Ведь Вечный обещал Давуду: «Через Моего раба Давуда Я избавлю Мой народ Исраил от руки филистимлян и от руки всех его врагов».

19 Ещё Авнер говорил лично с вениамитянами. После этого он пошёл в Хеврон рассказать Давуду всё, что готовы сделать Исраил и весь дом Вениамина.

20 Когда Авнер, с которым было двадцать человек, пришёл к Давуду в Хеврон, Давуд устроил пир для него и для его людей.

21 И Авнер сказал Давуду: – Позволь мне немедленно отправиться и собрать весь Исраил к господину моему царю, чтобы они заключили с тобой договор, а ты стал править всем народом, как и желает твоё сердце. Давуд отпустил Авнера, и тот ушёл с миром.

22 В это время люди Давуда и Иоав вернулись из набега и принесли с собой богатую добычу. Но Авнера у Давуда в Хевроне уже не было, потому что Давуд отпустил его, и тот ушёл с миром.

23 Когда пришли Иоав и с ним все воины, ему сказали, что Авнер, сын Нера, приходил к царю, царь отпустил его, и он ушёл с миром.

24 Иоав пришёл к царю и сказал: – Что ты сделал? Ведь к тебе приходил Авнер! Почему ты отпустил его? Теперь он ушёл!

25 Ты же знаешь Авнера, сына Нера, – он приходил, чтобы обмануть тебя и выведать всё, что ты делаешь и куда ты ходишь.

26 Иоав вышел от Давуда, послал за Авнером вестников, и они вернули его от колодца Сира. Но Давуд об этом не знал.

27 А когда Авнер вернулся в Хеврон, Иоав отвёл его в сторону, в глубь ворот, словно для того, чтобы поговорить с ним наедине. И там, желая отомстить за кровь своего брата Асаила, Иоав поразил его мечом в живот, и он умер.

28 После этого Давуд, услышав о случившемся, сказал: – Я и моё царство навеки неповинны перед Вечным в крови Авнера, сына Нера.

29 Пусть его кровь падёт на голову Иоава и на весь дом его отца! Пусть дом Иоава никогда не остаётся без больного с постоянными выделениями, . или кожной болезнью, . или опирающегося на костыль, или сражённого мечом, или нуждающегося в пище.

30 (Иоав и его брат Авишай убили Авнера потому, что он убил их брата Асаила в битве при Гаваоне.)

31 Затем Давуд сказал Иоаву и всем людям, которые были с ним: – Разорвите свои одежды, оденьтесь в рубище и плачьте над Авнером! Царь Давуд сам пошёл за похоронными дрогами.

32 Они похоронили Авнера в Хевроне, и царь громко плакал у его могилы. Весь народ тоже плакал.

33 Царь оплакивал Авнера этой песней:
«Разве должен был Авнер умереть подлой смертью?

34 Руки твои не были связаны, ноги твои не были скованы.Ты пал, как падают перед разбойниками».И весь народ заплакал над ним снова.

35 Затем все они пришли и убеждали Давуда поесть, пока ещё продолжался день, но Давуд дал клятву: – Пусть Всевышний сурово накажет меня, если я поем хлеба или чего-нибудь ещё, прежде чем зайдёт солнце!

36 Весь народ видел это и был этим доволен, да и всё, что делал царь, нравилось всему народу.

37 Так в тот день весь народ и весь Исраил узнал, что царь не принимал никакого участия в убийстве Авнера, сына Нера.

38 И царь сказал своим людям: – Разве вы не понимаете, что сегодня в Исраиле пал вождь и великий человек?

39 И сегодня, хотя я и помазанный царь, я слаб, а эти сыновья Церуи для меня слишком сильны. Пусть Вечный воздаст делающему злое по его злобе!

6 And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.

8 Авнер очень разгневался на слова Иш-Бошета и ответил: – Разве я собака? Разве я перебежал на сторону Иудеи? Сегодня я верен дому твоего отца Шаула, его семье и друзьям. Я не предал тебя Давуду. А ты сейчас обвиняешь меня в преступлении из-за этой женщины!

9 So do God to Abner, and more also, if I do not perform what the LORD has spoken to David, even so will I do,

9 Так пусть же Всевышний сурово накажет Авнера, если я не сделаю для Давуда того, о чём клялся ему Вечный, –

10 не заберу царство у дома Шаула и не поставлю престол Давуда над Исраилом и Иудеей от Дана на севере до Беэр-Шевы на юге.

11 And Ashbashul could not reply to Abner, because he feared him.

11 И Иш-Бошет не осмеливался далее говорить с Авнером, потому что испугался его.

12 And Abner sent messengers to David, saying, Whose is the land? Now make your covenant with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with you, to bring all Israel to you.

12 А Авнер отправил послов от своего лица сказать Давуду: «Чья эта земля? Заключи со мной договор, и я помогу тебе перетянуть на свою сторону весь Исраил».

13 And David said, Well, I will make a covenant with you; but one thing I require of you, you shall not see my face, unless you first bring Malchel, Saul's daughter with you.

13 Давуд ответил: – Хорошо, я заключу с тобой договор. Но я требую от тебя одного: не приходи ко мне, если не приведёшь с собой Михаль, дочь Шаула!

18 Now then do so; for the LORD has spoken of David, saying. By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and out of the hand of all their enemies.

18 Теперь сделайте это! Ведь Вечный обещал Давуду: «Через Моего раба Давуда Я избавлю Мой народ Исраил от руки филистимлян и от руки всех его врагов».

19 And Abner also spoke in the presence of the Benjamites; and Abner went also to speak in the presence of David in Hebron. And when it seemed good in the sight of all Israel and in the sight of the whole house of Benjamin,

19 Ещё Авнер говорил лично с вениамитянами. После этого он пошёл в Хеврон рассказать Давуду всё, что готовы сделать Исраил и весь дом Вениамина.

20 Then Abner came to David at Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men who were with him a great feast.

20 Когда Авнер, с которым было двадцать человек, пришёл к Давуду в Хеврон, Давуд устроил пир для него и для его людей.

21 And Abner said to David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a covenant with you and that you may reign over all that your soul desires. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

21 И Авнер сказал Давуду: – Позволь мне немедленно отправиться и собрать весь Исраил к господину моему царю, чтобы они заключили с тобой договор, а ты стал править всем народом, как и желает твоё сердце. Давуд отпустил Авнера, и тот ушёл с миром.

22 And behold, the men of David and Joab came from a raid and brought a great spoil with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he bad sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

23 When Joab and all the people who were with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to King David, and he has sent him away and he has gone in peace.

23 Когда пришли Иоав и с ним все воины, ему сказали, что Авнер, сын Нера, приходил к царю, царь отпустил его, и он ушёл с миром.

24 Then Joab came to King David, and said to him, What have you done? Behold, Abner came to you; why have you sent him away, and he is gone from you?

24 Иоав пришёл к царю и сказал: – Что ты сделал? Ведь к тебе приходил Авнер! Почему ты отпустил его? Теперь он ушёл!

25 Do you not know that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you and to know your going out and your coming in and to know all that you are doing?

30 So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner because he had slain their brother Ashael at Gibeon in the battle.

38 And the king said to the people, Do you not know that there is a great prince fallen this day in Israel?

38 И царь сказал своим людям: – Разве вы не понимаете, что сегодня в Исраиле пал вождь и великий человек?

39 And I am this day troubled, and as king I see that the sons of Zoriah are too hard for me; the LORD shall reward the evil doer according to his wickedness.
